On 17 February we decided not to risk the insecurities and inequalities that would come with a face-to-face conference and to hold MES 11 as an online conference. The information below still applies to the originally planned face-to-face conference and will be replaced in time.

On wheels of rubber

If you consider to travel to Klagenfurt by car, you can check maps.google.com for a suitable route. The use of highways (German: Autobahn) in Austria is only allow with a toll sticker (click here for more information). Additional tolls might be charged when crossing the Alps.

On tracks of steel

Austria has a good rail system and allows you to reach Klagenfurt by train. Visit oebb.at, the website of the ÖBB, the Austrian Federal Railways, to look for connections to Klagenfurt, also from outside of Austria!

With wings

There are different options to reach Klagenfurt by aircraft. As Klagenfurt has only a small airport with a limited number of connections, it may be faster and cheaper to fly to a nearby airport and to travel on to Klagenfurt by train, bus or rented car. We advice you to to use a metasearch engine such as skyscanner.com to check how the various options meet your expectations concerning prices and comfort. If you do not fly to Klagenfurt directly, you might want to consider a short stay in one of the interesting cities city where your flight connection might end, for example in Ljubljana, Vienna, or Salzburg.

Your destination options are:

  • Klagenfurt Airport (KLU). From there, you can take a taxi, or walk to the train station Klagenfurt Annabichl and take the train to Klagenfurt West, or take bus line 40 to Heiligengeistplatz and then bus line 81 to Klagenfurt Universität.
  • Ljubljana Airport (LJU) is the airport of the Slovenian capital and only a good hour's drive away from Klagenfurt. AlpeAdria Line has busses commuting from Ljubljana Airport to Klagenfurt and back.
  • Venezia Airport (VCE) is an international airport in north-eastern Italy. From there, FlixBus operates a bus to Klagenfurt once a day. The bus ride takes somewhat more than 4 hours.
  • Treviso Airport (TSF) is a lost-cost carrier airport in north-eastern Italy. A local bus brings you to the train station Treviso Centrale, where three times a day an ÖBB train departs for a three-hour ride to Klagenfurt.
  • Vienna Airport (VIE) is the largest airport in Austria. From there, you can reach Klagenfurt in a 4-hours ÖBB train ride crossing the Alps with an astonishing scenery.
  • Munich Airport (MUC) is the second-largest airport in Germany. From there, you can reach Klagenfurt in a 6-hours ÖBB train ride crossing the Alps with an astonishing scenery.
  • Graz Airport (GRZ) is a minor airport in Austria. From there, a bus brings you to Klagenfurt in less than three hours.
  • Salzburg Airport (SZG) is another minor airport in Austria. From there, a local bus brings you to the train station Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, where you can embark an ÖBB train that carries you to Klagenfurt in three hours.

Please note that, contemporarily, flight offers might still be restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
