Description
The paper undertakes a systematic review on the role of time in the labour market entry and career advancement of humanitarian migrants in their host countries based on the idea that temporal awareness and future time perspective are suggestive of the ability to actively manage these processes. EBSCO interdisciplinary database searches led to a total of 160 references, of which 27 full papers were analysed by virtue of a criterion-based selection. A theory driven code system and the MAXQDA software were used for quantitative and qualitative analyses. Code frequencies show scant temporal references. Future time perspective, a concept related to an agentic orientation is found in papers adopting an expert or an individual perspective and were less present in publications featuring host country authorities’ or organisational perspectives. Further thematic analysis established connections of the time factor to capabilities and liberties (de Haas, 2021) particularly after arrival. Results are discussed with reference to the time perspective theory and cultural particularities.
